The 3 resume formats — and which one freshers should use
Every resume uses one of three formats. For a fresher, the choice is almost always the first one:
1. Reverse-chronological (recommended for freshers)
Lists everything newest-first. As a fresher you lead with your education, then projects and internships. It is the format recruiters and job portals expect, and the safest for ATS. Use this unless you have a strong reason not to.
2. Functional (skills-based)
Groups content by skill instead of by date and hides the timeline. It is used to mask employment gaps — which freshers don't have — so it usually looks like you're hiding something. Avoid it.
3. Combination
Mixes a skills summary with a dated history. It suits experienced candidates with a specialism, not first-time job seekers. Skip it for now.
The ideal fresher resume format, section by section
Put your sections in this exact order on a single page:
- Header — full name, professional email, phone, city, and a LinkedIn / GitHub / portfolio link.
- Career objective — two lines: the role you want and the top skills you bring.
- Education — degree, institution, year, and strong grades or relevant coursework. This comes first for freshers.
- Projects & internships — your substitute for work experience, each with 2–3 result-focused bullet points.
- Skills — technical tools/languages plus relevant soft skills.
- Certifications — online courses, training or workshops tied to the job.
- Optional — achievements, positions of responsibility, languages or hobbies, only if space allows.
Formatting rules that pass ATS
- One column, no tables or text boxes — these scramble in Applicant Tracking Systems.
- Standard fonts — Calibri, Arial or similar, 10.5–12pt body text.
- Clear section headings — "Education", "Projects", "Skills", in that plain wording.
- One page — a fresher almost never needs two.
- No photo, age, marital status or full address — they waste space and aren't expected.
- Export as PDF — it keeps your layout intact across devices and portals (unless a listing specifically asks for Word).
PDF or Word — which should a fresher send?
Send a PDF by default: it looks identical everywhere and won't reflow. Only send a .docx if the job post or portal explicitly requires it. Either way, name the file clearly, e.g. Priya-Sharma-Resume.pdf.
Format tweaks by field
- Engineering / IT / software freshers: add a dedicated Technical Skills block (languages, frameworks, tools) and put Projects above internships — recruiters scan for keywords.
- Digital marketing freshers: highlight campaigns, tools (SEO, Meta Ads, Analytics) and any measurable results from college projects or freelancing.
- Commerce / BBA / MBA freshers: lead with education and add relevant certifications (Tally, Excel, financial modelling) and live projects or case competitions.
- Non-technical / core branches: emphasise internships, training, and positions of responsibility to show initiative.
